Bradgate Park, Leicestershire
15th March 2015
As a mainly weekend and holiday time photographer, I have become accustom to competing for space with other people. Avoiding the general masses often means going early or staying late as was the case when visiting Bradgate Park last week.
Bradgate Park is part of Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire and dates back to medieval times. It has a number of features including the remains of Bradgate House, ancient oak trees, the Old John folly, and the war memorial on Beacon Hill.
From a photographic point of view there are panoramic views across the city of Leicester from Beacon Hill and a number of compositionally interesting rocky outcrops which are ideal for foreground interest.
However, when I arrived at the park during the afternoon it was incredibly busy and not the time to strike out the tripod and camera gear. People in the landscape can be interesting photographically but they must add something to the overall composition. Most of the time it is best to wait for a people free opportunity which requires bit of patience or, in the case of this trip, a helping hand from a stiff cold breeze that sends most people packing before the light descends.
