Clumber Park Watercolour

After an initial burst with this blog, I have found it more difficult to post regularly. This is not due to a lack of artwork but more about what I want to show and discuss. As an art novice I still question much of my output. Occasionally, however, one comes along that is not perfect but signals a sense of progress.
For example, this is a scene I painted from a photograph taken in Clumber Park. I feel it has a strong subject and tension between a man-made structure and nature, represented by the large tree. There is also a good range of tones and some descriptive painting which helps me to overlook other aspects that don’t like so much.

Moreover, I enjoyed the process of this painting which started with a quick tonal sketch. Using sepia paint only allowed a freedom to paint without making colour decisions. It also provided a practice run with some of the more expressive requirements of the scene (although I ended up with an unfortunate lean on the building which was corrected in the main painting).

Overall, I would happy to produce more paintings in this style, using local scenes as the subjects and perhaps even paint them outdoors. I will also endeavour to post more regularly and be less sensitive about my output!
