Haddon Hall Bridge

I rediscovered this watercolour of Haddon Hall Bridge from 2024 after an unrelated photo search. Art often comes in burst of creativity, a mixture of successes and failures. Sometimes I’m unsure about what to share online, and this is certainly true for my current work. Perhaps I was hesitant about certain elements of this painting in 2024 but time has smoothed over those doubts or sensitivities. The hesitancy probably stemmed from the unusual point of view and challenging perspective. For example, the trees need to appear to be growing upwards while the viewer looks down and the riverbank must seem higher than the water, as it is in real life. Like all depictions of form, the placement of highlights, mid-tones and shadows is the key to achieving this.
