Neocolor II

Crayons for Xmas for the first time in many decades! What’s more, Caran d’Ache Neocolor II look like any kids set except they are highly pigmented and crucially for me, water soluble.
They can be used directly onto a surface, either dry or wet. Alternatively, colour can be taken from the crayon with a damp/wet brush or mixed with other colours on a palette. I used all three of these methods to paint the following flower (which I think is a purple lisianthus)on hot pressed Arches pad paper (A4 size).
The neocolors are very intense and opaque at full strength. I also noted that they re-activate with water allowing easy blending and lifting of colour. This proved useful when painting the flower’s petals.

Going forward I see neocolors providing an additional solution for water based painting and sketching. They could also be used in conjunction with watercolour paints, particularly where an opaque colour is required, and being easy to transport, they can supplement the outdoor painting kit.
More on outdoor painting and neocolor in future posts.
