Oilseed Yellows

28th April 2015
Capturing oilseed rape in full bloom is an annual challenge. The yellows never seem to totally translate from the point of capture into the final image. I think the natural brightness often drives a temptation to underexpose and the results can look a bit like old mustard!

This year I have a shot that I am happy with. The composition is interesting. Normally I would not place a tree so centrally in the image but I don't think this matters when the really subject of the composition is the converging lines of yellow. I feel this takes the eye through the image to the tree which is bathed in evening light. In addition, the positioning and shape of the cloud counter-balances the central nature of the tree as it sits nicely in the top third of the image.

Moreover, I think I got the oilseed yellows spot on. This meant pushing the exposure on the sky and cloud at the point of capture and then making a correction with a digital graduated filter in Photoshop.
